Planning a trip to Switzerland?

Everything you need to have the best vacation ever with the best places to go, things to do, food to eat and places to stay in Switzerland!

Switzerland is one of those places where you just can’t believe how gorgeous it is.  The background in the photos almost looks fake, when really, it doesn’t even capture how breathtaking the landscape actually is.  There are so many beautiful places in Switzerland to experience!

The air is fresh, the grass is green, wildflowers are abundant (in the warm summer months), and the cows are grazing as their cowbells clink.  Switzerland is an ideal vacation place in the mountains.

If you are looking for an adventure vacation in the mountains of Europe, a Switzerland road trip (or train trip) may be perfect for you!  There are so many fun adventures in Switzerland, including endless hiking.  Some of the best hikes I have ever been on were while traveling in Switzerland.

With so many beautiful places, you may be wondering where to go in Switzerland… I can help!

Use this incredible Switzerland travel itinerary for the ultimate vacation in Switzerland. If you have 10 days in Switzerland, use the 10 day Switzerland itinerary. For 7 days in Switzerland, use the 7 day Switzerland itinerary. If you only have 5 days in Switzerland, then use the 5 day Switzerland itinerary.  If you are lucky enough to have longer, then slow down and enjoy a 10 days Switzerland itinerary.

This is a fun Switzerland road trip itinerary, traveling by car for most of the time, and with some train travel (there are some places that you cannot drive.)  The trip plan is great for family travel to Switzerland or for traveling as a couple or with friends.

Switzerland Itinerary 10 days

3 Days Bernese Oberland

How to get to Gimmelwald

GET THERE

  • Get an Alpine start and drive or take the train to Lauterbrunnen via Bern.

Click here to book your train tickets

Fun Detour (if you are driving):  The town of Gruyere, where Switzerland’s most famous cheese is from, is just on the way (just a little way off the main road.)   Stop here for a quick walk around the town, to see the castle, and to visit La Maison du Gruyere where the cheese is made. Book a tour in advance if you are interested.  5 km down the road, in Broc, is the famous Maison Cailler chocolate factory (book in advance.)  You can even create your own chocolate bar!

Click here to book a fun and delicious chocolate and cheese tour now or do this as a day trip from Luassane

Stop in Bern to walk around the old town.  If it’s summer, you may want to experience swimming and floating down the Aare River.

*If this sounds like too much for one day and you are interested in going to Gruyere, Broc, and stopping in Bern, you have two great options:

  1. Spend an additional night on Lake Geneva and do Gruyere and Maison Callier as a day trip.
  2.  Spend the night in Bern.
  • Continue driving or take the train to Lauterbrunnen.

Food Tips:  *Save money by stopping at the grocery store here (or in Interlaken if you are driving).  Stock up on food for your incredible trip up to Gimmelwald. There is a grocery store in Murren, but this one is larger and costs less.  If you are traveling as a family it is expensive to eat out in this area.

If you are renting an apartment with a kitchen, get Fondue ingredients and make it yourself!  You can keep it simple with Gruyere cheese, Emmentaler cheese, and white wine, with bread for dipping.  No fondue pot?  No problem–just use a stove pot (you will have to run back to the kitchen for a reheating, but you will be saving so much money!)  Don’t forget the Swiss chocolate bars for dessert:)

  • Park (or take the local train) to the gondola station, and take the gondola to Gimmelwald (or Murren.)

Switzerland Driving Tip: Drive the speed limit!  There is sometimes a hidden camera on this drive and its easy to speed.  You do not want to have to pay the price of a Swiss ticket!

DO

Things to do in Bernese Oberland

  • Hike, hike, hike!  This is one of the top places to hike in Europe.  Get a map and directions and set out early in the morning.  The Northface Trail is one of the best. Walk around Murren at the end of the hike.  Gather a picnic from the meat market and the small grocery store (if you didn’t pack a picnic).
  • Buy fresh milk, cheese, and eggs from some of the local farmers in Gimmelwald.  Just check their boxes and leave money inside.
